laptop not detecting cd drive

i have this laptop i got from a friend because it wouldnt work. wouldnt get a picture except in safe mode. i fixed the picture and am posting on it now, but it wont detect the cd rom drive. it gets power, will open and close, but wont show up in my computer or read cd rom's

What OS are you running?
I would just go to the website of the manufacturer and download and drivers or software for it.

also check to see if the drive shows up in the bios
