Laptop not booting when added additional memory

I have a Gateway 450sx4. It has 256mb ram and I bought another stick of 200-pin SODIMM DDR ram recommend for my laptop by crucial. Anyways, I put the additional memory in, and my laptop will turn on, starting the fans, and that's it. The screen doesn't come on, and I don't hear the HD working. Does anyone know how to get this to work. I did everything that Gateways says to do in this guide. I also took to memory that the laptop come with and put it in the other slot, and it works fine. Thanks for the help.

Does the laptop run properly when you remove the Crucial stick and boot only with the older stick of ram?

If so then i would agree with rpbri that the ram is bad.
