Laptop noob question

Slimline

Golden Member
Hello, I am going into my second year of college and am looking to purchase a laptop for genereal use. (Living in canada so prices are respective) I am on a budget and managed to find a compaq r4010 on sale for 999.99. I am just wondering if you think this is a descent deal.

Light gaming will be used on this as well but my deskktop is going to be my gaming computer for the most part. Does anyone know what the ati radeon xpress 200 igp performs like or on equivalent to?

It will at least outperform onboard solutions like extreme graphics 2 and media acelerator 900 right?

I've only seen one benchie of the Xpress200M IGP and that was in a user's thread here about his L2000: GMA900 beat it in 3DMark2001.

When we get an Xpress200M based machine, you'll be sure to see in-depth testing; but for now consider it less than or equal to GMA900.

You say "It will at least outperform onboard solutions," what do you think that is? The Xpress200M chipset has an IGP (Integrated Graphics Platform(?)) that is based on the X300. It is basically an X300SE with shared memory. Nothing more.

I apologize about the lack of clarity, I was referring to the more standardized onboard solutions from intel.

I ended up purchasing this laptop and am typing from it now. I am quite impressed with it so far and will get some benchmarks done in the mean time. However one thing I want to know more about that noone seems to know, including the amd website is the processor. It is rated at 1.8ghz and aida 32 says it is athlon 64 compatible it seems. Does anyone have more info on this processor and if it really does run as a 64 bit proc.?

Download CPU-Z and take a screenshot.
But to my knowledge all Semprons are now 64-bit enabled, so yes; it should be ready for XP64.
