A friend of mine brought her laptop over and complained that the screen doesn't turn on. I tried booting it and although the power indicator lights are on I get no hard drive activity, no POST, and the backlight for the screen doesn't turn on. Where should I begin to look?

A dead CMOS battery on a laptop can cause some major effects. You might start with replacing it. Unfortunately, this may prove to be a major operation, as many CMOS batteries on laptops are soldered to the motherboard.

Same symptoms happened to my brother's lappy. He flies a lot, and the lappy is often on the plane's floor. He had it repaired - the fix was simple - the CPU had worked a bit loose due to aircraft vibration. Reseated CPU, and normal returned.
