laptop no battery question

Hi,

I have a question about general laptop operation.
This may sound obvious but I haven't got a laptop to try myself. (never had one).

Can all laptops work off the adapter without battery inserted? in other word, if your battery is dead, your laptop can still work from plugging on the wall?

I've never heard of any laptop having trouble running off adapter only. I've tried it with a Dell Latitude CPi and an IBM Thinkpad 570 without any problems.

it's just that i had laptop before and thinking of bidding in ebay for one with bad battery.
thiking either I can get battery separately or just work it off adapter only.
