Laptop newb

As far as specs I know quite a bit, but which brand is better is another thing. Is it a preference thing or is one brand better than the other?

I am looking at a HP, Gateway and a Sony Vaio. The Gateway has the better specs but if one of these brands are much better than the other I could sacrifice some performance.

For laptops, I recommend Toshiba, Sony, HP or Apple, probably in that order. Even the cheaper Toshibas and Sonys seem solid. I have less experience with HP and Apple.

For laptops, I recommend, in this order.
Apple
Lenovo Thinkpads
HP
Sony
Gateway
Toshiba
Dell

My recommendations:

Lenovo
Lenovo
Lenovo
Apple
HP

I would not recommend Sony or Dell based on past issues with support.

Don't forget Asus, they make some really spectacular notebooks as well.

What are you trying to do with this notebook and how much are you willing to spend? Beyond that, we can't really do much to help you.
