Laptop my arse

i had to get a monster laptop for work to handle 20gb+ images for demos. I was in a hurry and didnt really look at the weight and really wasnt concerned anyhow. this thing is only for certain presentations...not a daily commuter with me.

but MY GOD!

I got the Acer Aspire 1714smi....3.4ghz desktop P4, 120gb seagate barracuda, 1gb of ddr333 ram, 128mb geforce go5700, gig ethernet, 802a,b,g wireless etc...

the thing is 16lbs! it looks like a coffee table. the freakin power supply weighs more than some latptops.

it's only like $2k which was surprising, but i dont see how anyone could lug this beast around. i realize some ppl want desktop replacements, but i'm afraid my computer table is gonna crack.

oh, and it also sounds like a Leer jet when it's running something intensive....3 or 4 fans.

battery life= 41 minutes. i thought ppl at work would get a kick out of it, but most ppl simply stare and say "WTF is that?!"

Got the Acer Aspire 1681WLMi Instead.. Only a 15.4 widescreen, 1.5Ghz Dothan CPU and a 64MB 9700, but it's only 6.5 lbs.. I figure it will handle my gaming needs (bf1942)..

it seems to game pretty well. got 23k on aquamark and 3k on 3dMark03

never thought i would be able to play something like far cry on a "laptop"

You should have spent an hour or so on research before plunking down $2k. You could have gotten the Acer Ferrari for the same price, and it's half the weight of yours, and probably better performance (MR 9700 128mb).

The only good thing about that laptop is 120 gb HD. I wasn't even aware that those existed!
The vid card sucks (I'm assuming that the 5700 is as crappy as the 5650) and the ram is slow. DDR333 on a desktop replacement? Give me a break.

The only question now is do you want to return it?

My laptop gaming doesn't extend very far behind earlier Black Isle titles (e.g. Baldurs Gate and Fallout). Not being able to play the latest 3d shooters is a small price to pay for my less than 4 lbs. Dell Latitude C400.

Whither now, oh laptop? Are we going to see high-end CRT's on notebooks designed for serious gaming? 😛
