I'm trying to make a pc for my wife's friend's family for Christmas, they specifically need a machine to run Edubuntu - not a big deal - and it would be very simple as well. While brainstorming with my wife we thought this would be a killer gift if we jammed the whole dealy into an ammo box (he's in the military, my wife and his wife are very good friends and they've been very good to her this past year, plus we go drinking on occasion) and paint it up with bright colours and add Dora the Explorer stickers (her daughter and son are crazy for Dora).
No, onto the question: I have a friend who offered an old Compaq laptop, working, if I want it. Is there a way I can use the motherboard - just the motherboard really, well RAM and HDD too - and just hook up a monitor externally without needing to use the Fn keys? The optical drive would not be needed, and the USB/Network/Sound ports I can unsolder and extend.
Thing it will work? Physical dimensions and cooling aside.
Thanks in advance
