Laptop Modem

I have an Inspiron 9100, w/ BCM v.92 56, modem. I've used it to fax from the Windows software, but only B&W. I've downloaded software from Black Ice, but it is looking for a Class 1 modem and sees none. Is there an upgrade to Class 1, or am I unable to fax in color to color fax machines?

Welcome to the ATF. Find out the AT "I" (Info) codes for your modem and use HyperTerminal (a basic telecom package that comes with Win or you can DL a copy from http://www.hilgraeve.com ) (in Terminal Mode) to query the modem. Or try the Belarc Advisor (under free downloads) from http://www.Belarc.com or a program like it.
. Or go to "Phone & Modem Options" in Control Panel > click the Modems tab > click the Properties button > click the Diagnostics tab > highlight the modem to test > and click the "Query Modem" button. It might tell you there.

When I query the modem, one line of response says (Command)AT+FCLASS=? (Response) 0,1,2,2.0,8. Does that mean class 1 is supported. The Black Ice software requires Class 1, but doesn't see any modem. I can easily fax b/w with the Wdws Fax Driver, but was looking for freeware color ability

Try the Belarc Advisor (it's a hardware inspection/inventory program - tells you just about everything about the installed hardware) I linked for you. See what that says about your modem.

BCM V.92 56K Modem is the response from BelArc Advisor, doesn't say Class 1 anywhere.....

According to this webpage: http://www.opennet.ru/docs/HOWTO/Unix-Hardware-B
uyer-HOWTO/modems.html they say "Class 1 ? base EIA standard for fax control as extensions to the Hayes AT command set." So it sounds as if even the most basic of fax software is Class 1.

WOW, I just found it myself, on the Dell page, Specs for the BCM V.92 56K modem: Class 1,2,2.0 just like your software said, so sounds like it's a Black Ice problem if it can't find the modem.

Yep! Remove Black Ice and try the latest Zone Alarm. It's better anyway.

Yes, unless they have changed recently, Black Ice only blocks incoming attacks. It does nothing about nefarious programs that are already on your computer (spyware, etc.) trying to "phone home".
. Zone Alarm is always at the top of the firewall Editor's choice list, but I have found Sygate to work nearly as well and doesn't seem to cause problems when you want to remove or update it. With ZA you must carefully follow the update/removal instructions and even then there may be problems. Both ZA and Sygate have professional (paid) versions but they also have "free for personal use" versions that are adequate for most home users. However, if you are on broadband, you are a prime hacker target so one of the pro versions might be worth it.

Sorry, but I wasn't looking for firewall, anti-spyware etc software, I was trying to use Impact ColorFax Lite, from Black Ice, to see if I could use my laptop to fax in color, but ColorFax won't see my modem at all

I just went to the Black Ice site and It looks like that color fax software should work fine with just about any fax/modem. WinXP SP2 messed with a lot of things. Have you uninstalled old, and installed your latest fax/modem drivers after installing SP2? If not, do so and see what happens. IAC ui/rei anyway.
