Laptop modem question???

I have a Toshiba laptop with a built in software (controllerless) modem. I suffer from dropped connections and it's getting to be a pain. I want to get a PC Card (pcmcia) modem with the controller built on it. Question is, am I going to see better connections through this PC Card modem. Does anyone know of available information (comparisons, etc.) Thanks,

A good quality PCMCIA modem will likely be better than an onboard software modem.

HOWEVER keep in mind that the problem may not be your modem. Check your phone line - listen to it on a phoen extension (regular phone - not a wireless). If you hear any popping, crackling or static then call the phone company and have it looked at.

Another possibility is that it's your ISP. See if they have another number in your area you can try.

I recommend you buy the modem from a local retailer with a liberal 30 day return policy. If you're not happy with it, return it.

3Com modems are the best but they're pricey. Any Rockwell chipset modem will do a good job.

I've been using my Portege's softmodem for the past three days and it's been doing great... do as FlyingPenguin states, check other causes for drop connections first. Also check if someone has been calling in, I think I noticed myself getting kicked once or twice when someone attempted to dial in...
