Laptop, Modem, No connection, No ideas left

I am actually trying to help my parents. They bought a Fujitsu Notebook that has an Ajere Modem '97 (com 3). Unfortunately they have AOL (dial-up) and want to use AOL on the laptop. Well the computer will not connect to AOL no matter what we do, it won't dial-up to anything even hyperterminal tests say "no dialtone". We have activated the modem, tested the modem (tests fine), tested for conflicts, reinstalled/uninstalled software, exchanged the laptop for a new one, dropped the XP SP2 firewall, deleted Quicken, called AOL, tried different versions of AOL, called the phone company, called Fujitsu and still nothing -no connection. The desktop PC works fine on the same phone line and with the same software. Any other ideas?

Just tried it in another house and it's still "no dialtone". Two different laptops, two different phone lines, same result!

Try a different modem in the laptop. Is the expansion slot dead?
