I have an hp pavillion zd7000 17" behemoth, and it works great except for the fact that its fans make the loudest noise ever.

I tried cleaning the fans and removing the dust, but that did not help at all.

I want to try and buy quieter fans, but i'm not sure how i would go about replacing them, nor what fans i would replace them with.

any suggestions? i dont have a ruler on hand, so I actually don't know the size of my fans, but they look about the same size as the fan in my 5.25 addonics external enclosure. if i was to guesstimate, i'd say each fan is about 2 inches in diamter, maybe less.

any idea where i can find a quiet fan that's the same size and will keep my laptop cool?

thanks

Those fans are not easily interchangeable unless you salvage one from another similar system. It is noisier than before? The bearings may have gone bad. If it's just staying on too long then look into different bios versions as they tend to rework the code for the fan cycles in every release. Newer releases may not necessarily be any better.

Bearings and dust are what usually cause old fans to run loud. If you're lucky the fan will be a stock part that you can order from a large electronics supply house like Digikey or Mouser (be ready to spend $10 - $25 for each fan). If you're unlucky, it might be a custom fan designed for HP.

All you can try is opening it up, and cleaning your processor, and applying a nice coat of AS Ceramique (easy to clean) or AS Silver 5 if you want. Hopefully this will allow your heatsink to do a better job and maybe keep that fan from coming on as often.
