Laptop messed up, need help..

Well for a few months my nice laptop has been messed up.

When I turn it on, all I get is a blank screen, no windows or anything. I've tried everything possible, and I cannot seem to find the issue. I called HP and they want a $300 fix.

It is a HP pavilion DV9000 laptop.

* Can you hear the HD spinning up?
* Can you see any image on the screen in a dark room?

Give us more details

I'll even give someone $$ if I fix this damn thing, was a damn expensive laptop, and now its a paper weight.

C2D T7700 (2.4ghz)
4 gigs ram
geforce 8600
2x160gb

damn good laptop..

If you tried every thing than No one in the world can help.

Your hope is that it might be that you did not really tried every thing and that one of us know things that you do not.

In such case do not be lazy and explain in details what did you try?

Did you try to connect a monitor?

Does the Boot screen appears?

In nay laptops the inverters goes bad and thus the screen does not show up.

Seek the Maintenance manual of the computer and look for an inexpensive Inverter.

Example, http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Pavilio...80507458QQcmdZViewItem

remove cd drive and hard drive.

try a known working stick of ram

try a known working cpu

disassemeble the laptop the best you are confident with and try to find the cmos battery. sometimes it is in plain sight under a removable panel or sometimes under the keyboard. unplug the power, remove the main battery, and then pop the cmos battery. this will many times revive a seemingly dead system when in fact it was perfectly fine.

I booted it without the hard drives, I booted it trying each stick of ram one at a time.

I reset it by holding the power button for 1 minute without the power plugged in/battery.

I even hooked it up to my computer monitor, same crap.

Sorry if i'm coming out as an idiot, i'm just very stressed and i'm starting college in a few weeks.

I got off the phone with HP not too long ago, now they want a flat rate of $398, and $99 to diagnose the issue. I'd rather set this thing on fire.

They also screwed me out of my 3 year warranty, and gave me 2 year, but I'm over that..

I will check, but is it worth fixing? If HP is charging this much, I guess that local places will be the same, if not higher..

No... If you find a good shop, they won't charge you that much.
Basically HP is selling you a new laptop.

If you hear everything running in the background, but get no monitor output, then that means that most likely your graphics chip is failed and that will be a full motherboard replacement, and yes that will be expensive. A computer shop will probably do it for 300-350$ total.

Not in NYC, there is No Laptop work that involves opening the Laptop (even if it is one little screw) for less than $200 + parts.

Switch On the laptop and look at the lights.

If the On light is On and the HD blinks for the first two minutes then rests, it usually means that the laptop works but there is a screen problem.

Otherwise, it can be anything and you need to open and start trying known to be good spare parts.

If you do not know how-to, then make a price for Blain. 😉

It turns on, the screen lights up, and the HD works..

Would it be that piece listed above that would be the problem?

Something weird has happened..

Well I haven't touched the laptop for months, but I remember what it use to do, and not do.

I just tried to boot it up, and nothing, the light on the side is on (it is being charged) but when I push the power button, nothing happens.

Well.. After doing some research I have the nvidia problem, I'm pretty sure the motherboard needs to be replaced..

PM me an offer on how much you want to buy the laptop for, pieces of crap laptops with the same model number like mine are going for 2-300 on eBay. And they have the 1.7ghz processor, and 1gig of ram.

Sorry, but...

Lesson No. 1 What wrong with my laptop? Done.

Lesson No. 2. What should I do with a none working Laptop that seems to need a new Motherboard?

Option 1. Log to ebay and search for HP Pavilion dv9000 motherboard.

http://cgi.ebay.com/432945-001...53304872QQcmdZViewItem

Hmm.. It is $164. I do not really know how to technically do this and I do not want to Risk $164.

Option No. 2. Sell it.

Go to ebay and see How much, HP Pavilion dv9000 goes for.

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Pavilio...0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

They Start for about $400 (depending on condition and what is in it).

Thus if some one wants it and given that they have to spend time, money, and take the risk that it would not make work with only changing $164 Motherboard, $150 would a fair offer to start.

So head to the FS forum (make sure that you forum's profile is enable) and try to offer it for $150.

Disclaimer, the above depict the logic of what one does under such circumstances, YMMV.

I gave up, $3k laptop, now worth only a few hundred.

I had a long talk with HP yesterday, and no luck.

I posted it up on eBay, hopefully i'll get something for it to fund for a new laptop.

What do you guys think about the net books?

I, like a lot of other people, think that netbooks are the only portable computers worth buying. They're small enough to actually be portable, and cost far less than HP wants to fix your screwed up laptop. They're cheap enough that if you lose one, its stolen, it gets crushed, whatever, it doesn't require months of paychecks to buy another. So, after 29 years of owning computers, I bought my first 'laptop' (a netbook) about 7 or 8 months ago. I now own 2 netbbooks.

Chances are you have the dead nvidea chip, There is a lot of the DV9000 series laptops are dead due to the Chip:

Dont let HP fix it: You can a new board on Ebay for $140.00 plus ship - That beats the $300.00 to $400.00 that HP wants for repair.. ( BUT ) you will have the same problem. The Nvidea chip is the same as what is in you're PC allready. HP or Nvidea will be fixing these hopefully in a major recall or Class action lawsuit. Also go to HP website - There is a recall on some of the batteries - Yours may be one of them..

Yup, I love my Eee900. It does everything I need it to do, and it fits in a cargo pocket. It's a little pokey, especially comparing it to a C2D, but the portability far outweighs the performance deficiencies for me. I have a fast desktop, so my portables don't have to be that great.

I wouldn't pay more than a few hundred $ for any note/netbook. I treat them like the disposable junk they are, and buy accordingly :^D
