Laptop memory question

I recently bought DDR2 667 for my mothers laptop and when it didn't work I tried it in my laptop and still no go. I can't believe that both sticks are dead. Both laptops use DDR2 533. I searched through the bios options but didn't find any options to choose. Is that the problem? The DDR2 667? I thought the bios would automatically kick down the divider or what ever to compensate...

EDIT: should I RMA it and exchange for 533?

The problem is, many of the OEMs (Dell, HP, etc) use motherboards in their desktops & laptops that are locked to a few kinds of memory, especially in older systems. This is why I always suggest people upgrading an OEM system use the memory upgrade tool at crucial.com and buy the memory from them. If chosen using the tool they guarantee compatibility & you don't have to worry whether it will work or not.

Now, you might have just gotten a pair of bad sticks (unlikely, since there are two) but I doubt it. And the 667 versus 533 is not an issue, the memory will just be clocked down to run at 533MHz. It's much more likely that you have incompatible memory and a new pair of the same sticks isn't going to fix that problem.
