This is a well known problem with some of the older ACER travelmates and aspire series. Corky's right, the battery is what needs to replaced. But the battery doesnt cause the machine to lock up. Instead it disables the KB and TP, giving you the appearance of a hard lock. If you are out of warranty or dont want to shell out for a new battery, you may want to try a BIOS update first. If that doesnt work, try ACER's support line, they may hook you up with a one-time free battery/fix but YMMV.
