laptop keeps freezing

Ok, so I just finished piecing together a Solo 2550 laptop computer. I had a 2500 (333mhz) and I upgraded to the 2550, by buying a new chassis, and an MMC-2 mobile CPU (of egay...only cost 80 bucks). And I took the 12.1 lcd screen off my old laptop and put it on the new chassis and moved all the parts over as well. Everything boots and I install windows 98se, but once it's done installing and I'm running win98se, it frequently locks up and I have to use the "emergency reset" button on the bottom. If it didn't freeze during install, but does while I am running win98, is it the OS? or is it hardware related?

Check if there is space between the HS and fan. I upgraded the chip on my Presario 1800 3 times and once I didnt put enough thermal tape to have a tight contact between the chip and HS and was getting lockups and shutdowns.
