Laptop is Dead..how to test?

Gorrillasnot

Senior member
I am working on a Fujitsu LH531 that doesn't seem to be getting any power.
When plugged in no lights are on and the power button does nothing.

I am guessing the motherboard is dead. Is there anything to test to be sure?
How would you guys/girls test it?

I know it's not the power brick because it works on another laptop.

thanks

First make sure the power supply is feeding it power.

For instance the laptop could be fine and your power supply died. Let's hope that is the case here.

I have also seen it where the laptop is fine and powersupply was ok and the batter was dead and the laptop refused to turn on with a bad battery and or refused to turn on without any battery attached and once a good battery was in then it charged and turned on just fine.

So try the above steps first then we can go further.

If you have a multi meter... you can test the battery to see if it has a charge.
As inachu stated, sometimes the laptop will not respond on a bad battery.

If the battery does hold a charge, then yea, bad planner board.

Are you sure it's the correct power brick? Just because it plugs in does not mean polarity is correct.

thanks for the info guys.

I have taken it apart to look at the motherboard and jack to see if there were any obvious signs of damage. I didn't see or smell anything unusual.

The power brick is the correct one. The owner has 2 identical laptops and one works and one doesn't using either of the 2 power bricks.

I didn't know some laptops wouldn't work without a (or with a dead) battery.
I will see if I can use the battery out of the owners other working laptop.

anyone know where to buy a replacement motherboard? I only saw 1 on ebay and it was $172.76 which is a bit too expensive in my opinion.

thanks

Do you know your exact model number? I saw several places that asked for more information than what you have given us.

Here's a video, might help might not. You can google the issue you have on you tube in you tube to see if someone has repaired this before. Opps, link removed your doing this for money.

It's been awhile since I have used the forums here..Is it against the rules to ask for help here if your getting paid to do a repair?

I have looked on youtube and all I could find was a video showing what looked like a reflow of a chip on the motherboard (north bridge?)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9dMFH80dqs

So what? A lot of people ask questions related to work. If that isn't their sole reason for being a forum member, I don't have a problem with it.

So pay me then, you work for free? Nothing a little googling wont fix...........

Just to update..I cant find a replacement motherbaord.
There is only 1 motherboard on ebay, that I could find, and its $173 which is wayyyyyy to much!

and I have done a LOT of googling and youtubing. I see no fix for this problem for this particular model of laptop.

thanks
