Laptop (Inspiron) Busted. How to recover data?

My gf has got a busted Dell Inspiron 3500 Laptop (doesn't want to power up) and I was wondering if there was a simple way to grab the data from the HD which should be in working order. If this was a desktop I'd have no problem trying it on another PC but I have no experience with laptops so I wonder if someone here knew what the best course of action would be. I can't seem to figure out if the drive is IDE or not.

the drive is IDE. it comes in a carrier with an adapter that fits the drive into the notebook. if you pull that off you'll just have a plain 2.5" IDE drive, and you can get an adapter that will make it go in a desktop.
