I got a compaq laptop for free today and it is shutting down of it's own accord. I am assuming the HSF is not doing its business. I have it all apart, but all the sites I have looked at say to apply the artic silver 5 to both the hs base and the cpu. Now I only put it on the cpu in desktops, and this is my first ever laptop. So do I just do the cpu or both?

edit, the hs base has this black sticker looking thing around where the cpu contacts the base. Do I scrape all that off? I assume that is just helping to hold the thermal pad in place?

Thanks

I always do the cpu core only.

That should be the old TIM. Peel it off and clean up residue that is remaining. Goof Off, Prestone brake cleaner, and 90% alcohol seem to work really well. I've also used lighter fluid on occasion.

Also, does that thing have a fan in it?

If so, make sure it's working properly...

That might be why it's shutting down! ;)
