Laptop - How can I connect it to a monitor?

The screen on my parents laptop has all but died.. Its really really dark and hard to see anything.. So they went and bought a monitor, but im not able to get them to work together..

Are there some settings I need to change? When i go into display properties, I see the laptop monitor as 1. and the new monitor as 2.

Anyone know what I need to fix?

Hook the monitor to the laptop and then, usually, all you have to do is press a key combination to switch between the lcd and the external monitor. Dells are Fn + 7 or 8.

The Friendly Manual should have the keys to press to switch the primary display to the external monitor, so Read.

If it's a real company instead of Akbar & Jeff's Laptop Ko. the manual should be googleable if not on the manufacturer website.

Have you tried booting with the Laptop screen closed? Some times it'll switch over to the external monitor.

I tried those key combos and they didnt work, although it did make the monitor flicker... im going to check the manual

Just set the other monitor as primary. As simple as that.

"unattach" the second monitor from the winxp display properties. then use the key combination and it should switch over

I tried to unattach the primary monitor but it wont let me.. it is grayed out and not even an option. I can unattach the secondary monitor though.

yes, unattach the secondary monitor (the CRT) so that you're left with just the laptop screen. then hit the key combination

fn +f5 works for me. Compaq laptop.

try the bios. set it to external CRT only.
