I have a old HP ze4900 and I think the fan is dead, the fan never seems to come on so.
Is there a way to test the fan somehow?

There only seems to be one fan, can I replace it, what kind?
I was only able to find a heatsink thing, do I need that or can I just get a new fan?

You need to check the part number of your old part to see if it matches. Replacing CPU heat sink and fan on a laptop can be very intense. I suggest going to HP's website and download the service for your laptop. Don't forget to clean the old thermal paste from the CPU and apply new thermal paste. Good Luck!

Replacing a HSF on a laptop involves complete or nearly complete disassembly. Be sure to download the service manual or schematics before-hand.

Man thats alot of work to just get to the fan, and the static stuff is not cool. What do I do for the static I dont really understand. And when they say thermal pad, do they just mean
paste?

No, thermal pad and thermal paste are two different things. You can get either one at online store or compusa.
