I explained to you why he should spend the money for your mom. Your computer is adequete for you. sorry it isnt bleeding edge enough for you. If it was a laptop then maybe yoru dad would do a swap for you. give your old one to your mom and get you a new one. however it isnt, so he won't.

once again it is a business investment for your mom. you have to spend money to make money.

I still is not ironic that yoru dad wants to buy your mom a better computer than you have. ask your english teacher next year.

I just took a visit to Dell.ca and a Laptop with 2.2 ghz with everything my dad wants is edging $3000. This dosen't include the 2.8ghz and some other insignificant stuff though which would easily add another $800 on.

Didn't you read what I said? I'm sorry if you can't see it. There are some other issues as well with my family that I'm not even going to bring up which would probably slant my judgement but honestly I don't understand this. A $3000 investment for loading up pictures and word which my dad thinks will boost my mom's sales of homes.

i am reading what you said. I don't think you will find help on these forums since you appear to be wrong. Most people will say the same thing. She is workign directly with customers, I think it would be poor for her if her laptop hangs or otherwise makes a bad impression because you felt a 150 mghz laptop coudl do the job.

sorry.

Why are you putting words into my mouth now? My dad has a 133mhz laptop right now and it does pretty damn good, so I know a 2.8ghz isn't need. I'm not saying an upgrade is a bad thing but a reasonable upgrade would be proper.

as I keep saying, why shoudl they skimp? You can not easily/cheapily upgrade laptops. Might as well buy for the future. especially since someday this computer may be yours.

Why are you guys wasting time on debating this?

On topic, I will be so bold as to recommend an IBM. Great quality, with great warranty (some of them). Something like a T-series. There was a hotdeal some time ago, $999 for a T23 at pcconection.com. They are also pretty cheap at the IBM authorized Ebay auction. If not IBM, my recommendations are Compaq/HP or Toshiba. Especially for value.

And you are right in thinking that a 2.4ghz P4 will open a word document just as fast as a 1.2ghz P3. Maybe you should start looking at the Centrino laptops. The extra battery life could come in handy if she is going to be dragging it around all day. Which brings me to size, as small as possible. This is even more true when it is actually going to be used as a portable computer. I doubt by the time that the new laptop is obsolete, that one could feel the extra mhz from a 2.4 vs. 1.8. That would be like your dad having a 166mhz instead of a 133mhz. Big deal.

To sum it up. Size, battery life, and quality/warranty.

Edit: If she is going to be using wifi, make sure to get a laptop that uses the mini-pci cards. That way she doesn't have to have an antenna sticking out the side (pcmcia slot). But it is not everywhere that there is hotspots. Over here in Europe, there can be long between them. Typically they are used in homes and offices.

My goodness, 31 posts and the only guy that makes sense is JZilla above. I totally agree with him. Look broader at other laptop technologies as well.

As for the power needs of your mums laptop, I think that for JUST loading pictures and word, you dun really need such fast processors. However, arguing that wif ur dad would prolly be fruitless cuz over the years Intel has convinced everyone that more MHZ means faster...no matter what 😉.

However, the wireless thing that you were talkin' 'bout could be an area of debate cuz wireless "wherever you go", I personally have only seen on TV. Even if that was possible, I would imagine it to cost a fortune in ongoing payments.

Good luck 😉

Ender did you try to make an analogy? Compare computers to cars. Word processing and pictures are basically like driving to your supermarket, you don't need a super fast lux. car for it. On the other hand for gaming and stuff of the sort you may need a fast lux. car.
Lastly can it be possible your parents want to secretly give you this laptop in some sort of sick psycho plan they have devised?

He also says he needs the fastest computer to 'load' pictures instantly. Can you guys give me some sort of link that he can read and tell him that he dosen't need such a fast laptop? He dosen't trust me on telling him that such a fast computer would be a total waste of money.

This guy at work asked my opinion on what laptop to get. I first asked him, what he was going to use it for, surfing the internet and MSOffice, and how much he wanted to spend. I suggested he get an used 1 ghz T22 or T23 Thinkpad off ebay and spend the rest of his budget, ~$1500, on a good desktop system.

But he is convinced he needs a 2.8 gHz laptop.

I disagree

I think we make perfect sense to those that have comprehension skills.
