Ok so i am new to the forum and i need some help picking out a laptop. I have read lots of reviews and i know what would be best( a desk top lol) but the reviews dont really talk about the laptop as a whole ( reviews on parts like cpu and gpu only) and the games they mention are ones i dont play often.

Im looking for a 15 inch or so laptop i need at least 8 gb ram, hdd doesnt matter much as ill probably swap it out later.

I am looking for a laptop similar in gaming capabilities to my 3 year old destop. It has a i5-2500k and hdb7770 oc edition. I have both overclocked but i dont expect that lol. My monitor is 60hz so even though my rig is able to do better 60 fps is all im shooting for in my laptop.
Im selling my desktop due to moving and i just cant justify the space anymore. So i am looking at a laptop.

I mostly play free2play games lol, dota 2, heroes of the storm, world of tanks etc i do own skyrim and starcraft 2 and some others everything runs great at high or better so i want that in a laptop too.

My budget for the laptop is what ever i sell my desktop for im trying to keep it above 600 but probably wont see 700.

So im looking for help to find the cheapest rig that can run those games on high or better at 1080p at least 30fps but as high as possible.

My main problem is that i might buy new games too( fallout 4, which i know will not play on high but new games can be lower) so i downt want something that is complete trash as far as the future but i know i cant afford a new 960m gpu or better. And im unsure if dual core laptops with hyper threading will actually be enough.

Ive seen dual cores with 950m and quadcores with 940m and im struggling with stuff like that.

Sorry for long post. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you can up your budget a little, an Inspiron 15 7000 starts at $800 with a 960m.

I saw that they even had a sale down to 749. Freakin awesome but im sorta looking for last resort kind of what will get me by is i have to sell my computer for cheap cheap like 650 or so and i just have no budget for more. Im even open to used! Am trying to get feed back on real world gaming like if i mostly play league of legends and an occasional game like skyrim and fallout what will excell at league but be playable for the newer triple a games. I dont need 60 fps or ultra settings for new stuff sorta thing. Sorry im bad at explaining it.

If you can find a 950M laptop with GDDR5 for less than $750 with a full voltage (~3.5GHz) four thread CPU then it might be an option to consider. Personally I haven't seen anything like that yet.

Most 950m come with DDR3, and these GPUs run 25-60% slower than a GDDR5 960m depending on how much the game stresses the VRAM. The DDR3 950m runs 20FPS at 1080 in many newer games (FO4, AC, Witcher 3, GTA V, FC4, BF4, etc). Lowering the settings you can straddle that 30fps line, but a GDDR5 960m could be well into the 40fps range with similar settings.

As for games like LOL, DOTA2, D3, etc the DDR3 950m will run them good.

I guess I should mention the 940m as well, since I see it in the OP.
Simply put, the 940m is just barely enough to run your F2P/low end games decently.
It's physically half a 950m, and thus can only get half the fps at best.

I had seen a sale on an HP laptop with an i5 and 940m for $500, and at that price it was worth considering only for the most basic of gaming.
A 940m is a small improvement from the stock IGP in most basic laptops, so it's only worth considering when you can get it for the same basic price or nearly free.

I'd like to point out that as far as GPU's go we haven't had a real update since about 2012. There have been minor updates along the way, but essentially the low end video cards today are the same as they were 4-5 years ago. There's been a lot of problems with new manufacturing nodes. You can still buy a 7770 brand new today, with just a different name on it. This is especially true in the mobile sector where power and heat are critical factors. Without a new manufacturing node to reduce the power and heat output of GPUs we haven't seen the performance bar move up on the low end.

Ty so much for your answers i have seen some videos of a 940m playing fallout 4 but i think that was probably on 768 res and i know it was all low lol.

The 2 laptops i was looking at which are still more than i can outright afford but are in my original 600-700 range after rebates and such. I dont have links but one is an acer that has a skylake quad core with a 940m and ac wireless with mu mio or what not. The other is a msi with a dual core i5-4210h or somethibg with a 950m. I know ideally quad core and better gpu is what i want but for these lower systems and the games i play/want is a quad core more important or gpu? I would be ok lowering settings and res for NEW games but want 1080p smooth for my older and free games. I know the cpu has at least some input in this and on desktop( all i have experience with) anything less than quad is boarder line retarded.

Both are roughly same price less than 20 difference. But the msi is more even though its older and only dual core.

Might also help to mention on my desktop i stream sometimes, and record almost all my games to upload after editing. I know a quad would be much better with this but i could just cut down on that stuff because its inly for fun lol.

Instead of trying to squeeze gaming into such a low budget (especially on a laptop, which is naturally going to be more expensive than a desktop of probably twice the power), you should really try to up the budget.

Now, I'm not telling you to go out and spend $1500 on a laptop, but $800 will take you very far.

Im seeing that and i might have to do that. Even if it means waiting months to buy one and just not gaming until then. Honestly i spend 80% of my computer gaming on lol and hots and starcraft 2. I have consoles( gifts, my friend paid for half of one so i could play cod with him lol) to play newer games i guess. Thats why i was asking about gaming i do. I know the better stuff from the worse stuff and laptops are crazy to begin with guess i was looking at what would be good for my free games mostly. Based on real world not just benches that dont pay those games mich attention.

Got model numbers for the laptops so I can attempt to look them up?

The 940m is a huge step down from a 950m, but an i5-4210u is a huge step down from a skylake quad.

I'll keep an eye out, something acceptable might pop up for the holidays.
