ok, I'm going nuts over here cuz I have this old 1998ish Sony Vaio laptop with a sh*tty Fujitus 4 GB HD. The HD is noisy and sloooooooooow. I took my laptop apart today and found out that I can take out this HD and get a new one. Now I'm just curious as to how it would perform any better? Such as those new 4200rpm Traveljet drives. Has anyone reviewed notebook HDs? Or am I fighting a lost cause? thanks.

You are essentially fighting a lost cause. But if you don't have much choice you might want to give it a shot. Make sure you get the right size hard drive (MM). Also, SoDimms are pretty cheap nowadays so you might want to max out the ram, that'll help.

If you really want a faster HDD, look into IBM's 5400 RPM Travelstar drives. The 32 GB HDD in my ThinkPad is a 5400 RPM drive, and it benchmarks between ATA 33 and ATA 66 in SANDRA. I though that was pretty impressive since the interface is only ATA 33 and I didn't think it would be faster than the SANDRA referance system for ATA 33.

eeek 32 GB, was thinking more along the lines of 6 GB since this thing only has a 266 pentium-1
