I have an Averatec 6100HS which has fairly good performance hardware (p4 3ghz HT, 512 DDR, Radeon 9600) however the hard drive is lacking (4,200 RPM). I want to replace the HDD with either a 5,400 or 7,200 RPM drive. Can I simply replace the drive the same as I would in a regular PC? is there any type of interface/size/heat constraits that I have to worrie about?

In a modern laptop as long as you get the correct formfactor drive (eg a 9.5mm high drive in 2.5" form factor) you should be fine. as a note make sure that your system will support the heat from a faster drive.
