laptop hdd question

so i have a dell inspiron 2100, which uses ata5 20gig drive that came with it.

what i'm wondering is if i can get a ata6 and be ok..

the current hdd is loud and clunks 🙁
 
The only issue I'm worried about is the mobo recognizing a driver larger than 36GB.

ATA shouldn't matter, the drive will just perform at the fastest specification available to it by the mobo.
