Laptop HDD as USB Mass Storage

Trying to pull data off a laptop hard drive. Laptop is dead due to short in power supply/cord. I have an "adapter" that goes from HDD to USB on my PC. However, there is no way to power it. Will it be able to be powered thru USB? I have hooked it up already, and although my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage device, it does not show under My Computer. I was wondering if maybe the power issue was the reason.

I DID go into Manage after right clicking on My Computer, but it still doesn't show.

the enclosures and the usb adapter that i have usually will power the drive but i have come across some older drives that need extra power, which on my usb adapter has a separate power supply.

I have also seen some front usb ports on towers not provide enough power too.

Also one other thing that has happens to me too is i sometimes have to plug it in, let it detect it and once done then removed and replug in for it to properly detect and see the partition

Thanks Dahak, I'll try the plug in, then remove and plug in again. Good idea that I should have thought of, but sometimes we all overlook the obvious :)

Thank you for the reply JackMDS, but I'm just trying to connect a laptop hard drive to get the information offof it. I don't need an enclosure. BTW Dahak, it didn't work :(

Not quite sure what to do now, but it's not my PC so I don't "really" care. Although I tod the guy I would try. I don't know why it would detect the drive as a USB Mass Storage, but not show up under my computer.

the other thing that I can think of off hand is that some laptop drives are set to cable select, not often but i have seem some of them that way to and need to make sure that it is set to master for them to work to properly.

The worst case scenario is that there is the partition damaged and may need some recovery software to get the data off

Is the drive damaged in some way? Maybe try running chkdsk or something on it? Not sure if it would work, but could give it a try. If it was easy to pull data off it, I'd imagine the guy wouldn't have had to ask you, lol.

Got it. Just kept plugging and unplugging the USB portion until it finally asked what I wanted my actions to be. I then oped with Get Data Back, and am now in the process of recovering the "My Documents" portin. Gona take a LONG time, but it's well worth it.

Thanks for the help.
