Laptop HDD + Adapter + PC. ERROR: Parameter is incorrect.

I am trying to salvage a friend's data from her laptop and am starting to freak out. Windows was corrupt (missing a SYSTEM file), we do not have a restore CD so we cannot "repair" it. I tried running Ubuntu in order to bypass the OS entirely but that too fails to boot from the CD. Also tried safemode etc.

I purchased a Laptop HDD to PC IDE adapter and plugged in the laptop hard drive to my PC. The drive shows up in 'My Computer', but I am unable to open up/access it. After selecting the drive in 'My Computer' and hitting enter, 1-2 minutes pass by, and this displays:

G: is not accessible
The parameter is incorrect

Is there anything I can do??

She has XP (32bit), I have Windows 7 (64bit). I have 6gb ram, gtx285, and a i7 920.. if that even helps determine anything.

Thanks!

the drive itself may be failing, some hd manufactures have tools available to download so the drive errors can be corrected or data recovered.

what is reported by windows 7 when goto 'administrative tools / computer managment / disk management ' does the drive show up there ?

'The parameter is incorrect' is a very vague message which doesn't really mean anything other than 'something isn't working'.

Connecting a broken hard drive to a USB adapter will often give this error.

Your only option is to connect the drive to a PC via IDE and see if that makes any difference. Chances are that it won't because the drive is trashed - but sometimes, you get lucky - at the very least, you'll stand a chance of using the manufacturers test software on the drive. (The test software won't work on USB adapters).

That's what I'm saying. The laptop is connected via IDE to the PC (with the use of an adapter).

When I right-click 'my computer' and click 'Manage' nothing happens.

Sounds like the drive is borked then. You should try the freezer trick (google it). If that revives it, make sure to copy the important stuff off ASAP!
