Are all laptops 2.5" drives? Are some in another format? I have a friend with data on a 2.5" drive and she needs to recover that data.. how do I get that drive in my desktop? Adapter kit? Does Best Buy sell those? Frys? Is there anyway to use another laptop to recover her data?

I am assuming the laptop the hard drive is in can no longer be used. There are hard drive enclosures which make that laptop hard drive an external hardrive. You can purchase from many stores like best buy and frys, althought it may be cheaper buying from online retailers.

this is what you want

Yea.. I think that is what I need. I am safe assuming its a 2.5" drive in a lappy? I heard there are 9mm too? Also, any idea if it voids the warranty to open the lappy? (HP)

Laptop hard drives are 2.5" and when you buy enclsoures they come in 2.5, 3.5 (for laptop hard drives) and a 5.25" for the had drives you put on desktop computers. But, opening a laptop does void the warranty. If the laptop stilll works just transfer it over a network.

All lappy drives are 2.5". The 9mm number is the thickness. That can vary from 9mm to 12.5. That usually makes to difference at all.

Laptops generally have user-removable HDDs mounted in trays or caddies. I have changed many of them, and have several on hand as spares.

I use external USBcases for them - either USB or Firewire, and they have many good uses. The internal adapter also works, and is very inexpensive at any electronics parts store. About $6. Here is one attached to a 2.5" drive:

http://www.geeks.com has the 2.5 to 3.5 adapters too - on SALE for a bit over 7 hours longer today for $2.99. That is the best way to connect if diagnostics and/or data recovery needs to be attempted.

There are actually some laptops that use 1.8" drives, though this is rare and generally only used in very small laptops. It may not necessarily void the warranty if you open the laptop up. I would check with HP if you are worried about that.

Fry's looks like it also has a cheap USB enclosure this week (~$10). Honestly that's what I would do since a) external cases are easier to work with if you're only hooking it up for a short period and b) if you're not used to working with live, exposed components it gives a lot more peace of mind.

Hi, Didn't read all the replies, but you got some pretty good advice. External housing will cost a minimum of about $20.00 and the adaptor kit will be about $10.00. Adaptors come two ways, connectors only or including brackets to mount the drive in the PC. You don't really need the brackets. Good Luck, Jim
