Laptop HD -- Dead ???

I have been having a tough time with my laptop and hopefully somebody here could offer some advice ! 😀

When it boots up it tries to run scandisk and is unsucessful everytime. It locks up - and has found numerous bad sectors. My girlfriend uses it quite a bit and wants it fixed - curious if I should simply reformat (which I have never done) or take it in for repairs as the Hard Drive may be totally fried.

Thought ? Suggestions ?

You could try fdisking/reformatting, but in every case I have seen where scandisk hangs and bad sectors are found the drive is shot.

It's not too difficult to replace the hard drive in most laptops. If the whole computer is still under warranty then by all means I would take it in. But if it is out of warranty, post the make and model and we'll see if we can give you some pointers on replacing the drive.
 
It should be pretty easy to replace the HD in that Thinkpad. You can probably get a 4GB laptop (i.e., 2.5&quot😉 drive for about $120. IBM probably has some documentation on their site about how to remove the drive. Here's a link IBM Support. Get the machine type and model off the bottom of the machine and look that up.

The HD is probably in some type of carrier or subframe or box that you will need to carefully disassemble/reassemble to replace the drive. Measure the thickness of the old one to make sure the new one is not too thick to fit. It's usually not a problem, the new drives are much thinner than the old ones.
