Laptop HD clicking...

My friend replaced her old laptop HD with a new one less than a day ago but now the HD is making a clicking noise.

She's got a HP with 800MHz Duron (desktop processor), 256MB RAM, and 30GB HD. Cost was around $700. Not good if you want a dependable laptop.

Nothing bad seems to be happening, just the clicking noise.

Her old hard drive was kinda messed up too because it would constantly make a whirring sound even when nothing was being done and no programs were being run in the background.

Any comments? Try to get rid of the HP piece of trash?

I would backup the data on the hdd while you can. Then RMA that thing back to the company for a new hard drive.

HD doing clicking noises? That's bad, man. RMA it as soon as you can, before it dies.

Your description seems to imply that both the old and the new HDs make sounds, but the sounds are different.

I have seen laptops (albeit older ones) which attempt to power down the HD very often, as low as a few seconds. This could explain the wheer and the click.

Are the sounds happening with AC power as well as under battery power? Do they occur if you set all power conservation options to OFF (don't forget BIOS settings)?

Of course, your HD may be dying, but you already know that:)

its not the laptop's fault that that the hard drive clicks. its the hard drive. Also toshiba drives make an intermittant click type sound. its not very loud, but i know toshibas do that.

I have a HP Omnibook XE3 that did the same thing with a 10GB IBM Travelstar Drive, i was doing it for about 6 months and then i just got annoyed by it so I called up HP and RMA'd the unit and it came back with a nice quied Hitachi drive.....so i guess if u want it replaced then just call em up, other than that its prolly just the drive head hitting the side
