Girl friend's Toshiba M35X-S149 is dead. I have the Harddrive out, is there any type of USB adapter out there to get the information off of it??
Thanks

Thanks corkyg, I might even have one of those in a box somewhere. Didn't think of it fitting a laptop HD.

Nope that won't work. This HD is going to need a male, almost ribbon like adapter to go into it.
The drive is a HDD2189- +5v

Sounds like you have not removed the HDD from the Toshiba caddy. All HDDs have standard connectors, SATA or PATA(IDE.) Laptop drives are normally placed in a proprietary OEM's caddy or tray. That must be removed from the drive first.

Pulled the caddy off the HD, still no SATA or IDE under it. It has a little 18 pin connector??

That makes it a IDE (PATA) 2.5-in drive. The adapter from Newegg will handle it.

It doesn't look like any IDE connector I've seen. I mean there normally about 2.5 inches long, this thing is about .75 inches and kind of recessed into the drive.
I read a post where a guy used a "mad dog megavault" external case with this drive, if I can find one cheap enough I've give that a try.

Are you sure that there is not a Toshiba pin adapter connected to the HDD?
The drive has to be a standard 2.5-in IDE drive. Sometimes there are small adapters placed over the pins - they are a separate part of the caddy kit. HP does it with a 90 degree changer so the drive can connec t from a flat position downward.

It really looks like I've taken it apart as much as possible. The part I took off does what you said (turn it 90 degrees) but neither end is IDE.

I think you still have one piece to remove. Here is a picture of a HP IDE 2.5-in drive in the caddy with ther 90 degree adapter in place.

Now, by pulling firmly on the adapter away from the drive, it comes off and the IDE pins are exposed:

The 2.5-in IDE pins are in two rows, In the picture on top, the first 2 pairs of pins are power. They are separated. Then the IDE PATA pins are also in two rows, the top row haing 22 pins and the bottom 21. It is missing a pin in the center. It can only connect one way.

The only other 2.5-in drive connector is SATA. That is completely different, and there are two connector elements, and they are the same as on a 3.5-in drive.

Here is a picture showing both types without caddies or adapters.

There are no other types of drive connectors for 2.5-in laptop HDDs.
