Laptop Harddrive$?&@

I have this Compaq laptop and recently it has been giving me trouble. At first windows xp would not load. I used command prompt to find out if there was something wrong with a file. I found the problem and replaced the file. After a week later, I kept running into the same hard drive problem (the clicking, etc) and different files would have problems. I would randomly be taken to XP and onto my desktop. It could be a virus, but does anybody know what the problem might be? The computer even freezes when I try to format it or run Norton Antivirus.

Edit: Booting in safe mode clearly showed that the computer stopped responding after loading Mup.sys.

update: well i ended up getting the format to work after about 5 trys. the most excruciating, time consuming thing ever. still worried that the hard drive might crash but right now it seems stable.
