Laptop Harddrive won't detect

I have this hard drive that all of a sudden stopped detecting upon bootup. It was working fine, no problems before, when the desktop locked up and was barely responsive... then after reboot, no hard drive. The BIOS can't see it. I'm wondering if the controller went bad. Now if this had been a problem with the platter, I would have just gotten a hard drive failure right? This laptop has been a lemon since we've gotten it... LCD, palm rest, keyboard have all been replaced. In fact the keyboard is going to replaced a 3rd time now...

Anybody ever send in a drive for data recovery? What costs am I looking at?

its dead, the one in my lappy did this exact same thing
