Laptop Hard Drive Question

Want to put a bigger hard drive in my laptop (one of the HP Wal-Mart's from last year) - I found this drive at newegg. My only question is, what is wrong with it ?? $85 just seems a bit low for a 20GB laptop drive. I know IBM has had problems with the GXP's, but I've always read good things about the travelstars. Just curious if anyone has had any experience with this product line.

Thanks

Looks like a good deal... that drive was out of stock when I was looking for one so I guess you're in luck

By the way, I have a 40gb and 20gb travelstar and they are really reliable and quiet.

nI my experience, the only HDs IBM is having trouble with is the Deskstart series. Their laptop drives are reliable...at the moment 🙂

Here's my 2 cents: Go read the last 2 years of the Delltalk Inspiron forums for the last 2 years and you'll see literally hundreds and hundreds of posts of very mad people talking about their IBM Travelstars failing. Based on this I would never own an IBM 2.5" drive.

I have 4 Toshiba drives, and a Fujitsu drive for my Inspiron and they have all been working flawlessly for the last 2 years.

I have one in my Dell. Works fine, and is quiet.. I have not even installed IBM's noise reduction software.

As for looking on a support forum to get a feel for the quality of the drives...

How many Laptop PC's do you think Dell sells per week? If you see a few posts on the forums about them going bad, that is a very very very low percentage. I would also suspect that some of the posts are people not even knowing for a fact they have an IBM drive as Dell also ships Toshiba drives.

I have 4 ibm laptop drives, 1 32gb 5400, 1 20gb 4200, a 10gb and 9gb. Of these the 10gb has gone very noisy and was draining the battery on my laptop roughly twice as quick. I swapped the 20gb into my archos jukebox and thats fine and put its 6gb fujitsu drive into the laptop, the difference is amazing, its soo quiet and now my battery life is back to 3hrs instead of 1 1/2. To sum it up I would say that the ibm's do have a slightly high failure rate,, but they are probably the most used so this can be expected.
