Laptop hard drive loud

I bought a replacement Travelstar 20GB laptop hard drive from eBay, installed it, and it seems to be operating fine. The only problem I'm having is that it's pretty loud. It's louder than my previous 6GB hard drive.

It's not making any clicking noises. It's just really loud (sounds like the fan, but a bit quieter).

Is this normal?

Thanks

it sure is...especially the bigger ibm's. I went from a 2 and 3 gig, up to a 5 and 10 and they all got progressively noisier...i just went back to the 3 and sold the 5 and 10...

when your shopping for drives, find the one with the lowest bels (db's) in the specs...thats the only way you will find a quiet drive..some drives have acoustic management that can quiet them down, but I dont know if that utility works on laptop drives or not

Is this drive new or used? If it's used then the bearings must have gone bad and that's why it got sold. Not unusual for a hard drive to become increasingly louder as it ages. I just had to swap out my 30gb drive because it sounded like being on the deck of an aircraft carrier. If it's a new drive, then I would get it exchanged. Newer model drives are actually supposed to be quieter than those old sub 8gb beasts.
