Laptop hard drive dying, need replacement

Its a 500 gb 5400 rpm drive and it clicks and has become so slow the computer is almost unusable. I would have replaced the drive with something identical in terms of space and speed but im considering high mech hd disk price. Currently 300 gb is used but most of it is junk and games that have been installed for months. I do have my entire photo collection on it too, but i also have it on a couple of other drives so its not absolutely essential to have it there.

Suggestions?

So much has happened since Jan 2011 in the area of drives that it is too difficult to make any recommendations without specification of the system (including OS) and the utilization objectives. Besides advancements in SSD and HDD pricing due to shortage, Mech HDDs (since 1 Jan) implement AFT which potentially impacts installation and backup applications.

Its a sony vaio cw series laptop from Feb 2010

Core i5 first gen
4 gb ram
330m nvidia
Windows 7

Primary apps: mainly for travelling. Ill use the net to browse, do some word processing/pdfs, watch videos and light gaming.

The mech drive has been clicking for months but it hasnt slowed down like this until i recently. I have a spare 120 gb 2.5 from my older laptop that i have been using as external storage.

Anyhow, how long till the prices drop? Im still out for 10 more days and wont have use for the laptop for a while after that.

My drive in my laptop went south and so I went for an intel 320 160GB ssd. I got it for $130, which is about the same price as a 160GB hdd right now. To be honest you're best off getting an ssd. The performance will blow you away.

Stop being a digital hoarder. Clean your attic and get a SSD. Get a USB 3 dino drive for archiving and backup.

Half your data is probably trash, and half again is probably replaceable and can be download again.

This man speaks the truth.

I wouldn't get anything less than a 128GB SSD at this point. You can purchase a Western Digital 1TB portable HDD for your 'sutff' and access it only when needed.

128gb ssds are still quite expensive. I only use my laptop 12-15 weeks a year... getting a new laptop with an ssd and selling current one might be cheaper than buying a new ssd. The macbook air looks good at $1000.

The Seagate 500GB XT Momentus with five year warranty.
Second pick would be a WD Scorpio Black @ 500GB.
The faster RPM will add some spice to your life.

I second the Momentus XT, when my laptop drive crapped out I was considering an SSD, but couldn't justify the cost for the gigs I'd be getting (it's my only computer). Been very happy with sped up startup and access while still being able to install a bunch of games and movies/etc.

Ive ordered one ocz agility 3 120. I was consideribg getting one for the desktop as well but maybe later...its fast enough for now.

If you want to stick with mechanical... IIRC, Newegg is (or is it now "was"?) having a sale on the 500GB Samsung M8 in one of their recent newsletters, for only around $70 (or was it $60?), which isn't that much higher than the pre-flood prices. The M8 is a single-platter drive, released just this summer, so that's a plus...
