Laptop graphics boards? How's my configuration?

Where may I find comparisons of video for a given laptop? For example, how does a 5800 Go compare with an X300? A 9700?

In terms of power use and actual performance?

If it helps I am thinking about a decent mid-range ($1500) notebook set up for gaming. I have read several threads here but I am not sure what 'pretty good' is. Is 'pretty good' 30% of a top of the line mobile video board? So I am hoping for some hard numbers to work with. Right now I am looking at a Dell 9300 (hate them, but with all the offers right now they are giving a pretty good deal).

Granted, benchmarks can be misleading too...

Oh here's the configuration for those who are wondering:

Inspiron 9300.
Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHz/533 MHz FSB)
17" UltraWide XGA+
1 GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz (2 DIMM)
128 ATi X300
24x CD-writer/DVD (yeah crappy but I don't plan to burn DVDs)
802.11 b/g internal
Bluetooth 2.0 internal
6-cell battery (53 WHr)

After tax (BAH!) and free shipping the total is currently $1586.57

I'm debating on downsizing the hard drive and CPU to drop it just below $1500. Or buying it in another state and then driving and picking it up to save the $111 of sales tax :)

OR I am going to try to find a bare notebook shell and build something similar. But I do not have a clue on how to do that. (I've built desktops, but notebooks are something I have stayed away from in the past).

Any help welcome (or especially if you know where I can pick up a similar generic for less, I'm certainly not hooked to name brand computer makers. )

Cheers.

Why would you spend that kind of money on a "gaming" laptop? Where do you plan on using this? At home, or on the road?
If you are doing it at home, buy/build a desktop to do it. Laptops are not really gaming machines.

I ordered the same thing but with 512RAM, no bluetooth and Geforce 256 for $1275 after $25 coupon and 2% off for my Dell Preferred account.

I don't think that price is too shabby for a nice laptop. I have a 12.1" Vaio if I really need to carry it around.

I used the $750 off coupon fom www.rasputinj.com. No tax either in NY.

I think the better video and less memory will serve better for games.

some people want DTR and not a big desktop...

laptops are more portable than a desktop, no matter how much it weighs...the most is 12-16 lbs....still ligher than the average desktop alone

Uhm, go with the 6800togo or do not buy this laptop. In this config you are better off with the Inspiron 9200 because an MR9700 is faster than an X300. Please listen to reason and go with the 6800togo. It is an awesome laptop card...
Also use this coupon code : ?W$W$3K$D5R90Q for 750 off of 1999....

Defintely stick with the 6800 go if you can... as stated right above the X300 doesn't beat the M9700. Not that it's a bad card by any means, but it's not a laptop gaming card. Especially if you get a higher resolution screan, you'll want the added power.
