Laptop gets stuck after a hard drive is installed

My computer boots to setup when there is no hard drive. As soon as I install the hard drive, it gets stuck and I cannot even enter setup.

I tried a new 120gb maxtor hard drive and it is still giving me problems.

This is a HP nx6110 laptop

That is odd. Is the new HDD formatted? Is the OS intsalled?

In SETUP, make sure your 1st boot device is the CD/DVD drive. Then boot to your OS CD and see if that works.

Is this a Sata drive or is it an IDE? You might have to check your jumpers if it's an IDE and if it's a sata if your board doesn't support sata 3.0 you may have to put a jumper on the drive to get it to 1.5.

Other then that, might want to check to see if you can use another cable.

Remember - this is a laptop. 2.5-in drives are defaulted to Master - jumpers are not commonly available. The HDDs are usually in a drive caddy or tray. What brand of laptop are we talking about here?

Checking the nx6100's specs, it should use a PATA (ATA-7) HDD. It is a farily recent model. Are you still under warranty?

Can you boot with the drive removed using the bootable restore CD that came with it?

Do have another 2.5" drive you can try?
