a while back, my friend said that his laptop broke and it would freeze whenever it got to the bios OR right at the bios when he tried to access it. He's already bought a new machine so he's going to give/sell me the laptop, do any of you know any troubleshooting steps I could take, or should I just part it out like I was planning to do originally? Thanks :>

What you can try is flash to the newest bios. Please define broke for us? Was it dropped? Liquid spill perhaps?

Not to be a smart a$$, but it's kinda hard to flash the BIOS when you can't get past POST ;) . I would think either the BIOS battery, or, if it is easily disassembled, see if there is a BIOS reset (clear CMOS) jumper or solder points on the board.

Usually removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes would reset the CMOS to factory settings. It might also be helpful if you can include the laptop make and model. ATers here might own the same one, and can probably better help you with it.

I think it's a sager, I'm not positive. He'll get here this weekend with it :>

It is not physically broken, it's all inside the computer. Nothing was spilled on it either.
