Laptop for Wife

She is almost all internet/standard office usage...but might get some occasional use for light side of gaming...At this point, the most demanding would probably be TF2. Will I need discrete video card to play this or can some of the integrated solutions play this game without resolution turned down to low? Make some recommendations, if you like.

My budget is from $600-$900. Of course, if something cheaper fills the need...

"Laptop for Wife"... are you proposing a swap? I might be interested. Is your wife a good cook? I have a laptop with 8600gt graphics, so it could play TF2 pretty well. I might be willing to trade it for her...

I wouldn't want to do any 3D gaming with integrated graphics.

Engadget today mentions a HP laptop with 16" 13x7 display and ATI 4530 graphics for $830 (Pavilion dv6t, check shopping.hp.com)

Newegg has
- Toshibas with ATI 3650 graphics for $750-850
- Acer with ATI 3650 for $850, nvidia 9600 GS for $800 (nv mobile may die on you though)
- Asus with ATI 3650 for $800

Dell might have something in that range if you find a good coupon or Hot Deal.

3Dmark 05 (ATI = 5.37 times as fast as intel 4500, 9.1 times the x3100)
ATI 3650 = 7,358 ( link )
intel 4500 MHD = 1,370 ( link )
intel x3100 = 0,806 ( link )

hmmmm....interesting notion flipped... If your laptop has wireless N, maybe we could work something out! 🙂

LOL.

I can play BF2142 on my Toshiba with a t5800 4GB RAM and Intel 4500 video. I know BF 2142 is an older game, but the 4500 can play games. You might have to lower the visuals some but as far as My experience, I just left everything at stock settings and was able to play several maps with no issue.

Asus F6A-X2

4 GB RAM, 64 bit Vista, 250 GB hard drive, dvd rw, etc.

13.3 inch monitor, a bit small but it has the VGA out.

best buy had 'em for $699 but i waited a few months till the price came
down to $619.

oh yeah, core2duo @ 2 GHz.

i've tried using it with Photoshop CS4 & 3D Max, it's fast enough.

I hear hot and cold about ASUS and Acer laptops...never played with one myself. Can some of you give me feedback on your experience with them? I've been leaning toward HP (this is an HP town), but I'm open as long as the system is dependable.

I ordered the Asus and it should be here today. My hp dv1000 died so I needed a replacement. Another thing to consider is the Asus has a 2 year warranty where most others only have a 1 year warranty.

I'm not a fan of the Acer machines. The build quality just doesn't seem to be there for me. But that explains the cheap prices.
