I am looking to purchase a laptop soon and need some advice. I am limited to buying from either Bust Buy or Circuit City because I can get a gift certificate for either of these stores in the amount of $415.00. I am looking to spend somewhere around $1000.00. I will be using the laptop for real-time navigation and mapping in my Bronco, so I need something that will be able to bounce around somewhat. What would be a good machine that either of the above two stores would carry.

Thanks for any advice

I am not sure how CPU intensive the real time navigation is.... I assume that any laptop could handle it.

How are you goping top mount the laptop? On the passenger seat?

Any current laptop can handle real time navigation with a GPS module installed!! Look for other things like RAM, HD space and so on and compare the notebooks on that basis ... you'll need to buy the GPS module anyways as I don't know of any notebook right now that has one built in as standard configuration :D

Thanks for the reply. I already have the GPS and now I am running an old NEC Versa 6060. The hard drive is full and at 133 MHz the processor can?t handle the newer map programs. So far this machine has done well in the truck, mounted on a plywood sheet in front of the floor console. I am not familiar with the new laptops as far as hard drive durability and with the NEC I really didn?t care much if bouncing around made it crash. I only paid $145.00 for it.

I just didn?t know if Best-Buy was better than Circuit City and where I would get my best bang for the buck.

Thanks

My dad uses his 266MHz Laptop for GPS Navigation on his fishing boat. Works really well without any problems on WinXP with 384MB Ram. Power is supplied by the boats on board battery/generator through an inverter.
