Were I shopping Intel I'd be looking at an i3, maybe an i5 if there was some kind of deal on one. What is AMD offering these days? Have their new chips made it into laptops yet?

Holy moly what happened to laptop prices!!! I bought an i3 a little while back for around $200. The cheapest i3 at Best Buy is $400!!!

Edit: I paid more like $280, sill cheaper but not as extreme as originally stated.

$449.99 HP - 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - HP finish in jet black
Model: 15-BS015DX. Best deal I've found. Found some i3s cheaper but no optical and no touch screen...

Man I can't believe these prices. I bought an i3- 6000 series with 4gb ram for around $200 (no higher than $230) not that long ago. Later I saw my model was discontinued and the new model had 6 or 8 gb ram for the same money. Now the model one gen older (5000 series) is going for $300!

EDIT: Looks like I paid more like $280 for my i3, still cheaper than they are selling for now.

There are no Ryzen laptops yet so stay away from AMD.

$200 has not been a normal price for i3. You might have scored closeouts or refurbs or off-lease used or Black Friday doorbuster deals at that price but $300+ has been the normal price for i3 instead of Pentium/Celeron.

Are you sure you didn't forget about having $200 in store credit or something?

So I looked it up and sure enough I didn't remember correctly. I got an i3 laptop for $307 after tax so it must have been in the high two hundreds before tax. I guess current prices are not so bad after all. Silly me!

Yes, there are. BestBuy carries them. HP Envy x360 2-in-1 with Ryzen Mobile 2500U.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that. $700+ is a bit much to spend for Word and Excel though, when you can get intel i5 laptops for under $500.

So: the under-$500 AMD laptops are still using the slow, bad old AMD cores, but if you're spending $700+ and want some very light gaming power then there is at least one Ryzen model now.

If you care about gaming it's probably better to spend $800+ and get an intel + geforce 1050ti laptop instead.

Thanks for the help. I'll pass on the $700 AMD laptop. Was hoping for a repeat of the $280 i3 or something similar. Turns out we got it worked out without buying anything by swapping some things around. It might have been a blessing that I didn't find a deal because I might have bought a computer we really don't need after all.

If you do not care about screen resolution, i.e., (1366 x 768), the Dell factory store has i3 for $300.
