My mom needs a laptop, she will use it mostly for Word, PPt, Excel, and Web surfing. I am looking to spend less than $600. I found this, but I saw that it has a DVD drive, which she doesn't need. I can't find any laptops that are around the same speed (900mhz) with a normal CD-ROM drive and around the same HD capacity (20 gb). Does anyone know where I can find a good deal? BTW, laptop can be used/old/refurbished.

I say get the T22.
As you may already know, IBMs are solid machines, and a dvd drive can't really hurt.
The only thing I see that would justify not buying that is if you find another IBM without a dvd drive that is significantly cheaper.

IBM certified refurbished T21,22,23,'s are usually in great shape. I bought one direct from IBM, and like it. They gave it a noisy hard drive, though, and the battery lasts only 2 hours and is unreliable.

I am considering getting a Thinkpad 600 cause I have heard such good reviews (see Thinkpad from the late 1990's thread).

SerialPrecision- check out IBM's certified used page. follow the used link on this page

Mock - try flashing the firmware on the hard drive. you can find the firmware on IBM's support page here. that should solve the noise problem. as for the ibm 600 series, they are excellent quality, but isnt that a step back from your t series?
