Laptop for graphics and animation

Is anyone using a laptop for any type of graphics or animation work? I am looking into getting one soon and I am not sure what to get as far as the video card. I have been looking at Dell's Latitude D610 which has an ATI x300 but I am not sure if that will cut it. The laptop will be used for typical Photoshop, web design, and some CG stuff. Not sure how much of that the laptop will be used for off the bat but I am sure that it will in the future.

well, for photoshop and web design, you dont really need a powerful graphics card, since both are just 2D applications. You will need lots of ram, but not a monster graphics card. THe x300 will be plenty for sure. However, I dont know what type of CG you do, and if it involves 3D, you might want something more powerful. For comparison, the X300 is comparable to the radeon 9600 or so.

That's not really true. Sometimes, the X300 can be faster than its price range suggests, but really the X600 is the closer equivalent to the Radeon 9600.

Anyways, I'll say that if 3D is involved at all, get a laptop with better graphics than an X300.

Mobile X300 ~= Mobile 9600

unfalliblekrutch is right; no special GPU needed for photoshop/etc. What kind of "CG" stuff are you doing? If its related to 3D rendering in the least you will need more than an X300.

Well some of the programs that will most likely be used are 3DS Max and Maya. Not sure how soon these will be needed though, since those classes are in the future.

the X600 is more like a MR9700

x300 won't even run maya.

you need to look at a IBM/Lenovo T42p/T43P or one of the other mobile workstation class machines that Dell(m70?) or HP vend.... and it will cost you.

That is what I figured. Good thing I get a discount through work on IBM. Maybe my sister (the laptop is for her) will be better off doing the work in the lab for the animation classes she takes. I'll see how much it is going to cost.
