Laptop for coding

Need a laptop for some consulting work, mostly embedded code (nothing with a HUGE code base so I don't require a massive amount of CPU power). I know serial ports don't exist anymore on laptops so I can forgo that. But I likely want something that has good screen real estate, and don't care about too much else. I imagine anything is better than my 4 year old Gateway with an Athlon. Cheap is nice too! And maybe something that I can pick up locally, Staples, Best Buy, or possibly Micro Center.

350-450 range would be nice. Any processors to avoid? And brands to avoid?
