Laptop for AutoCAD and the like...

Hi guys

I would like some help in choosing one, since I dont know much about autoCAD and similar programs I'm wondering how does a gaming GPU fairs against a workstation GPU (Nvidia Quadro, AMD FirePro).

The laptop isn't for me but for my cousin and she needs a good laptop that can handle 3D models and stuff.

So its like:

-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M graphics with 2 GB of GDDR5 video memory

vs

-NVIDIA Quadro K3000M
AMD FirePro M4000
NVIDIA Quadro K2000M

Please the sooner the better since she wants to order it today (she is starting classes next week)

Thank you in advance.

PS:Budget $2000 just in case you have better suggestions
Also she doesnt play games so it doesnt matter the gaming side of things.

When I looked at it a few years ago, if the computer didn't have a workstation GPU, most CAD software would only use software rendering. Each CAD software should have a list of recommended GPUs.

i see, she used a sony vaio with an integrated gpu and it seemed to work well however the further into her studies she started using more programs and thats when the laptop started to show its weakness (also that it was a 4GB ram machine as well)

i know it makes sense that a workstation GPU will work better for what is meant to be used but I just thought to save her a couple hundred dollars since the gamer laptop I'm looking cost below $2000 with a powerful mGPU

thanks for the reply

The MSI GT series workstation editions are great, they even let you get round optimus issues that CAD programs can have by having the HDMI and display ports hooked directly into the GPU.

You can even get barebone versions of them.
