Laptop for around $800 that can play 1 game...

My friend wants to get a laptop for school, so she can take it around and do basic word processing/internet browsing at the library but also play a game like civ 4.

is it even possible to do this with a laptop around $800 or even less?

The ATI Radeon Xpress200M is probly the best integrated GPU out there, but Intel's GMA900 isn't horrible either.

Also try getting a Dell w/X300 for cheap with coupons. Right now there is $250 off $999; if you can built a $1000 machine with X300 and add your own RAM, HDD etc you should be ok.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that I paid $1298 for back in May, but it's almost maxed out on options. It has the X300 with 128MB RAM for video and it plays civ4 just fine. Price it out from Dell, than get the coupon codes from another website and price it out with the coupon code. Do it for a few months since there is no good deals now.

For $800 you are looking at a laptop with 512MB RAM, the video upgrade and nothing else. I would personally spend the money and get a warranty since a laptop is moved more often than a desktop and my Inspiron gets too hot to have on my lap.

I was playing Civ4 yesterday and my advice is get a gig of RAM at least. I have an ancient P3 933 with a Ge Force 5500. I'm playing at 1280x1024 at high settings. It's playable until you start to reveal a lot of the map and then the RAM usage skyrockets. My HD was going off non-stop last night and RAM usage was 750MB with 7 of my cities and around 10-15 other cities revealed on the map.
