Ok, I'll admit, I am fairly technically literate, and actually used to live on these forums...even balked at the type of question I'm about to ask. I've been out of it lately, and really haven't kept up on all of the mobile technology as of late, and I'm running out on time. I'm looking for a decent laptop for my girlfriend (actually her parents are buying it for her and asked me to look for one for them). She won't be gaming on this laptop, nor running any memory intensive programs. She will use it for surfing the internet, word processing, powerpoint, various Pharmacy projects, listening to mp3s, probably storing pictures, as I 'm sure even though she has a desktop, this will slowly transition into a full replacement, etc. I'm sure she will want to watch the occasional movie on it as well.
Now her parents set a budget of no more than $500, which is little to work with. No I know Core 2 Duos are the prime right now, but I know I can't get one in this price range. I really don't want to dwelve as low as a celeron or P4M, but what would be my best bet here really? All of the laptops are coming shipped with Vista and 1GB of ram, so I really feel that if she's going to run Vista, really upgrading to 2GB will be the most important investment. A 15"+ screen would be ideal, but if it can't be done in this price range, a 14" will have to do. Ok, any recommendations?
