laptop + fishtank = death

so my friend dropped a fish tank on her laptop. fish survived, laptop didn't. according to her testimony, no very much water got in, but when she picked up the laptop, some water came out of the rear cooling vent (so it got into the motherboard for sure).

she immediately removed the battery. (but I realize immediately probably isn't immediate enough)

have you ever had (or heard of) success in reviving a water-killed laptop?

I have the laptop on my hands, so I'm just going to start the time-consuming process of pulling out the mobo and scrubbing it with isopropyl.

Any other ideas or suggestions for possibly reviving it?

Blow dry the mobo and restart. If it boots, well you're lucky.

If not, try getting a used version that's available for parts. Many a laptop has been saved. I got a damaged laptop with a broken lcd and shell. The interior was AOK and it saved my laptop.

um....getting used parts is not applicable because everything is on the mobo. there are no replaceable parts that have to do with it not turning on

Unless that mobo is welded into that case, it can be removed.
I removed the mobo on my Dell Latitude and replaced it with a good used version from another laptop. with no problems. I gave it to my ex, and she still using it.

chances of success are good if you can remove the mobo, dry it, scrub with isopropyl and dry again before anything corrodes, a co worker of mine successfully revived a coffee spill laptop that would not post in this manner.

Yes, as long as it wasn't on, and wasn't turned on before it was completely dry. In those cases you have a good chance that it will work.

If you or her tried turning it on before it was completely dry, it's fried.

About 5 months ago, I did something unspeakable. I spilled a whole class of Jim Beam and Fresca right into my Alienware laptop while playing CS. Granted the thing has a P4, and a ATI9700 and is three years old, but the thing cost me 3,000 when I bought it. It instantly crashed and I smelled something not so pleasant. I took it all apart and starting drying and cleaning, and filed my insurance claim. But 3 days later it started right up, i canceld my claim and it runs good, in fact I believe some of jim beams natural healing ablilities cleaned er up a bit.

If water got into the switches in the keyboard you may have to disassemble it to dry it out. Not an easy job but I was successful doing it once.

Disassemble it the best you can, leave everything out to dry and maybe even blow dry it. If you don't turn it on until it's completely dry, you have a pretty good chance of saving it.

I spilled a whole cup of tea on my laptop, but it's a mac, and I think they are designed to protect the MB against such accidents. Still, I was lucky that it worked after I dried it out....

Good luck...
